Spurwink Retreat in June

Russ Tyson

Our site-specific design solution for Spurwink Retreat in Scarborough, situates the home at the edge of a sunny open field, preserving it and an incredible view toward a distant headland, an island off the coast, and a specimen pitch pine. The main living space is oriented with this view on one side, while on the opposing side we’re creating an intimate and protected courtyard. As Wright-Ryan Homes begins planting new pitch pines in the courtyard it is fun to compare construction photos with some of early conceptual design sketches

The landscape design by Richardson Associates Landscape Architects includes the installation of weathered boulders that are the size of some cars and trucks. Our recent site visit included careful documentation of each boulder and determining its eventual location and orientation in the landscape. One boulder includes a naturally depressed area for a bird bath, while another will be oriented so as to serve as the backdrop for a campfire pit overlooking the ocean.
