Cortland Barn - Winter Wrap-Up

We are excited to share the Cortland Barn project is nearing completion thanks to the efforts of Steve Brann Building & Remodeling and our thoughtfully engaged clients. Cortland Barn is situated in Freeport, Maine and was purchased with an existing heavy timber barn in place. Whitten Architects was tasked with creating an addition to accommodate first-floor living and to outfit the barn with livable space. Throughout the design process a continuous effort was made to incorporate rustic elements with modern, refined detailing.

The addition is dressed with contextually appropriate board and batten siding, metal roofing, and natural locally sourced materials throughout the interiors. Cost effective strategies included the use of a roof truss system, over-sized window units, and blending custom and semi-custom cabinetry. The use of solar panels and a high-performance building envelope speak to the clients' commitment to the property as a lifetime home.

The project is slated for competition in early March 2015. The homeowners and their sweet dog and bird are eagerly anticipating living in their newly pointed sun-filled home.
