BoathouseBoathouse

Project Location: Little Diamond Island, Maine

This project involved the extensive renovation and sustainable reuse of an existing coastal boathouse and pier, originally built in 1860. The design and renovations turned a once run-down boathouse into a place for family vacations at the edge of a Casco Bay island.

Wood timbers of new roof dormers on both sides of the original roof meld with the existing timberframe, while also providing added natural daylight and drama to the interior architecture. An upper-level private living space and bedroom fit snugly into one end of the dormer additions, while designed renovations to the main level allow for waterfront entertaining during both summer and off-season.

The original character of the classic boathouse architecture was maintained with exterior improvements meant to stand up to harsh weather conditions.

This project won an AIA Maine Award of Excellence in 1993.
