Cole Farm Residence

Scarborough, Maine

Completed in 2007

Photography: Rob Karosis

site conditions: A new property, part of a coastal farm with shallow soils, ledge, wetlands and an unappreciated barn.

client program: A lifetime home for a couple with adult children and grandchildren. Space needed for home offices, fully equipped wood working shop, a 4-season porch, a caretaker apartment, and generous living spaces for large family gatherings. Design to provide easy access for an older family member in a wheelchair with limited mobility.

design response: Secure and move 40’ x 60’ barn to the site, design a complimentary house and barn relationship with passive solar orientation. All first floor living spaces relate to the central fieldstone fireplace, with a remotely positioned master suite. The two guest bedrooms are on the second floor with a shared bath. The Barn spaces are organized within the existing timber frame grid and are used for wood working, garage space, mudroom, storage, and a second level grandchildren’s play space and a future caretaker apartment. A new cupola was added for the water view. Systems include a high efficiency propane boiler, radiant floors, low voltage lighting, networked computer systems, and high performance insulation.
